Gary S. Metcalf received a PhD in Human Science in 2000 at the Saybrook Graduate School. His doctoral research was conducted under the mentorship of Béla H. Bánáthy, focused on Social Systems Design and Organizational Development.Metcalf began his professional career as a systems-oriented family therapist, then spent twelve years in large corporations, designing and implementing employee assistant programs and corporate-wide health promotion programs. In 1998 he founded InterConnections, LLC an organizational consulting firm based in Ashland, Kentucky.Since 2003, Gary Metcalf has been on the teaching faculty of Saybrook University, as graduate instructor in Organizational Systems, and Research. And since 2011, he has been visiting faculty at Aalto University, teaching courses in systems thinking in the Master's Programme in Creative Sustainability.Gary Metcalf is a past president for the International Society for the Systems Sciences (2007–2008). Since 2010 Metcalf has been president of the International Federation for Systems Research, and was Vice President on the Executive Committee of the IFSR from 2002 to 2010.
